Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 2 cups Granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup Unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup Vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons White vinegar
- 1 cup Warm water
- 1 cup Vegan Chocolate Chips (optional)
Prepare the Oven and Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Alternatively, you can line the bottom of the pans with parchment paper for easy removal.
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
Mix Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
Add the Secret Ingredients
In a small bowl, combine the white vinegar and warm water. Add this mixture to the batter and mix until just combined. The batter will be thin.
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If using chocolate chips, sprinkle them over the batter before baking.
Cool and Frost
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, frost with your favorite vegan chocolate frosting. Enjoy!
