Ingredients
  • 1.5 kg Potatoes
  • 500 g Ground Beef
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 500 ml Heavy Cream
  • 200 g Gruyere Cheese
  • 50 g Parmesan Cheese
  • 30 g Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Thyme
  • To taste Salt
  • To taste Black Pepper
  • Pinch Nutmeg

Preparation

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a large baking dish (approximately 9x13 inches) with butter. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly using a mandoline or a sharp knife. Set aside.

Sauté the Beef

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess fat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.

Prepare the Cheese Sauce

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over low heat. Gradually add the grated Gruyere and Parmesan cheese, stirring constantly until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Layering the Gratin

Arrange a layer of potato slices on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly. Season with salt and pepper. Spread half of the beef mixture evenly over the potatoes. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the beef. Repeat layers: potato slices, remaining beef, and remaining cheese sauce. Top with any remaining cheese.

Baking

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly. Let the gratin rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.
