  • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Hot coffee
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 4 cups Powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 cup Pecans, chopped (optional)

Prepare the Cake Batter

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 15x10 inch sheet pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Add Hot Coffee

Stir in the hot coffee until the batter is smooth and thin.

Bake the Cake

Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the cocoa powder and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

Combine Frosting Ingredients

Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Stir in the chopped pecans (if using).

Frost the Cake

Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake. Spread evenly and let cool completely before serving.
