Cold Brew Coffee
A smooth, less acidic coffee concentrate brewed by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period. Perfect for making iced coffee or coffee-based drinks.
Ingredients
- 170 g Coffee beans (coarsely ground)
- 1000 ml Cold Water
Grind the Coffee
Grind the coffee beans coarsely. Similar to French press, a coarse grind is essential for cold brew to prevent a gritty texture.
Combine Coffee and Water
In a large container (such as a pitcher or a jar), combine the ground coffee and cold water. Stir gently to ensure all the grounds are saturated.
Steep in Refrigerator
Cover the container and refrigerate for 12-24 hours. The longer it steeps, the stronger the concentrate will be. Start with 12 hours and taste-test to determine your preferred strength.
Strain the Coffee
After steeping, strain the coffee mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter. This removes the coffee grounds from the concentrate.
Store and Serve
Store the cold brew concentrate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Dilute the concentrate with water or milk to your desired strength when serving. Typically, a 1:1 ratio (concentrate to water/milk) is a good starting point, but adjust to your taste.
FAQ
-
Can I use pre-ground coffee for cold brew?
While it's best to use freshly ground coffee for optimal flavor, you can use pre-ground coffee for cold brew. However, ensure it's a coarse grind and that the coffee is relatively fresh for the best results. -
Why is my cold brew sour?
Sourness in cold brew can be caused by under-extraction or using a light roast coffee. Ensure you steep the coffee for at least 12 hours and consider using a medium or dark roast for a richer flavor.
