Ingredients
- 8 oz (shredded) Sharp cheddar cheese
- 4 oz (softened) Cream cheese
- 2 (finely minced, seeds removed for less heat) Jalapeños
- 2 (finely chopped) Green onions
- 1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
- 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
- 2 Eggs
- 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 2 cups (for frying) Vegetable oil
Combine Cheese Mixture
In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cheddar cheese, softened cream cheese, minced jalapeños, chopped green onions, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Form the Cheese Balls
Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, form the cheese mixture into 1-inch balls. Place the cheese balls on a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Chill the Cheese Balls
Cover the plate with plastic wrap and refrigerate the cheese balls for at least 1 hour, or preferably 2 hours. This will help them firm up and make them easier to handle during breading and frying.
Set Up the Breading Station
Prepare three shallow dishes. In the first dish, place the flour. In the second dish, whisk the eggs. In the third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
Bread the Cheese Balls
Remove the chilled cheese balls from the refrigerator. Dredge each cheese ball in the flour, ensuring it's fully coated. Then, dip it into the whisked eggs, again ensuring full coverage. Finally, coat the cheese ball thoroughly with the panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to help them adhere. Repeat this process for all cheese balls.
Fry the Cheese Balls
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep saucepan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the breaded cheese balls into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. Be careful not to overcook, as the cheese will melt and burst.
Drain and Serve
Remove the fried cheese balls with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot and crispy. Consider serving with ranch dressing or a spicy aioli for dipping.
FAQ
-
Can I use a different type of cheese?
Yes, you can substitute the cheddar cheese with other types of cheese such as Monterey Jack, pepper jack, or a blend of cheeses. Just make sure the cheese is shreddable and has good flavor. -
How do I make these less spicy?
To reduce the spiciness, remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeños before mincing them. You can also reduce the amount of jalapeños used. Alternatively, substitute the jalapeños with a milder pepper, such as poblano or Anaheim pepper. -
Can I bake these instead of frying?
Yes, you can bake them. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the breaded cheese balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spray them lightly with cooking spray. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown, flipping halfway through. Note that they will not be as crispy as the fried version.
