Miso-Glazed Marinated Tempeh with Sesame Seeds
A savory and slightly sweet miso-glazed tempeh recipe, perfect as a main course or added to salads and bowls. The marination process tenderizes the tempeh and infuses it with rich umami flavor.
Ingredients
- 200 g Tempeh
- 2 tbsp White Miso Paste
- 1 tbsp Maple Syrup
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce (low sodium)
- 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 clove, minced Garlic
- 1/2 tsp, grated Ginger
- 1 tbsp, for garnish Sesame Seeds
- 1 tbsp, chopped, for garnish Green Onions
Prepare the Tempeh
Begin by steaming the tempeh for 10 minutes. This will soften it and allow it to absorb the marinade more effectively. Alternatively, you can simmer it in water for the same amount of time. After steaming, let the tempeh cool slightly and then slice it into desired shapes (cubes, strips, or triangles).
Make the Miso Marinade
In a bowl, whisk together the white miso paste, maple syrup, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger until well combined. Taste and adjust sweetness or saltiness as desired.
Marinate the Tempeh
Place the sliced tempeh in a shallow dish or a resealable bag. Pour the miso marinade over the tempeh, ensuring all pieces are evenly coated. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to several hours for a more intense flavor. The longer it marinates, the more flavorful and tender the tempeh will become.
Cook the Tempeh
Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the marinated tempeh in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the tempeh is golden brown and slightly caramelized. Alternatively, you can pan-fry the tempeh in a lightly oiled skillet over medium heat until browned on all sides.
Garnish and Serve
Remove the tempeh from the oven or skillet and let it cool slightly. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve hot over rice, noodles, or as part of a salad or bowl. It also makes a great addition to sandwiches and wraps.
